Proven, Not Narrated: How Desa Eko Won at Regenera 2026
164 hospitality properties entered the 2026 Regenera Luxury Awards across seventeen countries. By the end of the audit, forty-eight passed. The rest were disqualified or down-weighted during an evaluation process that relied on primary documentation rather than editorial voting, public polls, or glossy submissions.
For travellers looking at Bali, the results revealed something rare: four properties were recognised, each in a completely different category. Ulaman won in Leadership for its rammed-earth and curved bamboo engineering. Desa Hay in Canggu won for Quiet Luxury through intimate acoustic seclusion. Fivelements in Ubud took the award for Wellness Experience.
Desa Eko received the award in the Governance pillar for Supply Chain Traceability and Local Value Creation.
Here is what that audit actually examined, what it left out, and why supply chain verification matters more than sustainability slogans.
The short answer
Most hotel awards measure what guests see: the thread count of the sheets, the view from the pool deck, or the plating in the dining room.
The Governance evaluation at Regenera Luxury measured what happens before guests arrive. The audit team examined around one hundred operational documents per property. Roughly thirty percent of submitted evidence across all global nominees was thrown out because it relied on self-declaration rather than third-party paper trails.
For our hillside estate in Munduk, the evaluators looked at two specific supply flows: what built the rooms, and what enters the kitchen every morning.
What builds the rooms
Desa Eko operates eight rooms for a maximum of sixteen guests. The structures consist of canvas tents on raised timber footings and a 150-square-metre bamboo Studio.
Building on a steep mountain watershed carries real structural and ecological risks. Pouring deep concrete footings permanently alters the drainage of the volcanic slope. Instead, the buildings sit on elevated platforms that allow mountain runoff to follow its natural course toward the ravine below.
The structural bamboo for our Studio came from regional groves harvested on a strict three-to-five-year rotation. Because bamboo regrows from its existing rhizome root network, harvesting mature poles does not cause topsoil erosion or deforestation. Every batch of timber and bamboo was documented for harvest location, natural borax curing, and transport distance.
The audit verified that once a structure reaches the end of its useful life, the materials break down without leaving concrete scars across the ridge.
What enters the kitchen
The Botanist restaurant seats twenty-four guests around a single long hardwood table. It operates from 07:30 to 21:30 daily, serving both resident guests and daytime travellers exploring Munduk's waterfall trails.
Rather than contracting with commercial food distributors in Denpasar who truck refrigerated produce up the mountain highway, our kitchen runs on daily deliveries from twenty local farming families in Kayu Putih and Munduk.
The audit reviewed procurement ledgers, cash disbursement slips, and direct farmer receipts covering:
Mountain vegetables: chayote greens, local cabbage, carrots, wild ferns, and mountain herbs harvested at dawn.
Estate coffee: single-origin robusta grown under shade canopies by smallholders within three kilometres of the property.
Spices: fresh turmeric, ginger, lemongrass, and cloves gathered from terraced agroforestry plots.
Because the payments go directly to individual family growers without intermediary distributors, more than seventy percent of our raw food expenditure remains inside the immediate sub-district. That financial transparency was the core criterion for the Local Value Creation metric.
The honest downsides
Operating a strictly audited local supply chain creates operational friction that modern resort chains avoid:
Seasonal scarcity: When heavy rains hit the northern ridges, certain crops fail or rot on the vine. We cannot simply order out-of-season avocados or temperate berries from an international distributor. If local farms do not have it, the menu changes that afternoon.
Batch inconsistency: Hand-harvested robusta beans dried on bamboo tarps vary slightly in roast profile across harvests. We value that terroir, but guests expecting standardised Italian espresso blends occasionally notice the difference.
Patience required: Building and maintaining cured bamboo structures requires continuous manual oiling, inspections, and traditional thatch upkeep. It demands skilled local craftsmen rather than standard facility contractors.
Frequently asked questions
What are the Regenera Luxury Awards?
The Regenera Luxury Awards are a metric-driven global recognition program launched at ITB Berlin in 2026. The awards do not use subjective jury scoring or public voting. Instead, nominees submit approximately one hundred verified documents evaluated across four pillars: Leadership, Governance, Environment, and Wellness, Culture and Guest Experience.
Which other Bali hotels won in 2026?
Three other Indonesian properties received awards in separate pillars: Ulaman in Tabanan (Independent Boutique Hotel of the Year / Leadership), Desa Hay in Canggu (Quiet Luxury of the Year / Guest Experience), and Fivelements in Ubud (Best Wellness Experience / Wellness). Desa Eko was the sole recipient in the Governance pillar for Supply Chain Traceability and Local Value Creation.
How does Desa Eko track its food sourcing?
The kitchen records daily morning intake logs signed by smallholder farmers from Kayu Putih and surrounding villages. Deliveries are paid on direct voucher settlement, eliminating multi-tiered wholesale markups and ensuring complete traceability from field to plate.
Can outside guests experience The Botanist?
Yes. The Botanist is open to non-resident guests daily from 07:30 to 21:30. Reservations are recommended for groups, but daytime hikers visiting nearby waterfalls are welcome to stop for coffee, fresh mountain juices, or lunch.
Two nights, eight rooms, sixteen guests max. Breakfast and waterfall trails included.
