What You Can Buy in Munduk, and What to Bring Instead
Updated: Sep 28
Somebody forgets something every week. Usually the jacket, occasionally the charger, once memorably a whole suitcase that went to Lombok.
The useful question is not what to pack — it is what you can fix from here, and what you genuinely cannot. The answer is less obvious than it looks in either direction.
What the village has
Munduk is a working village, not a resort strip, which means the shops stock what residents need rather than what visitors forgot.
Reliably available: soap, shampoo, toothpaste, washing powder. Basic t-shirts and sarongs. Flip-flops. Batteries. Phone credit and data. Instant coffee, rice, eggs, noodles, biscuits, fruit, water. Cigarettes, if that is relevant.
Usually available: basic painkillers, plasters, mosquito repellent, sunscreen of uncertain age and unclear factor.
Sometimes: a cable that fits your phone. Do not count on it.
What needs the drive
Singaraja, down on the coast, is about forty-five minutes and has the nearest real pharmacy, a proper supermarket and an ATM you can depend on.
That is the trip for anything medical beyond a headache, for specific dietary items, for contact lens solution, for a replacement charger that is not a gamble.
It is a half-day. Worth knowing before you need it rather than after.
The last sensible stop on the way up
If you are driving north from the airport, Ubud or Canggu, that is your chance.
Anything you would struggle to replace: bring it, or buy it there. Prescription medication, specific skincare, particular coffee, a decent sunscreen, spare cables, contact lenses.
Tell your driver before you leave rather than remembering halfway up the mountain, where the shops thin out fast.
The things we can actually lend you
More than people ask for.
Sarong and sash for temples, so nobody needs to buy one. Umbrellas. Yoga mats and props, so leave yours at home unless carrying it is part of the ritual. A hairdryer, since rooms have one. Basic first aid. A torch, though your phone is usually enough.
Ask at reception before ordering anything from the internet, which in any case will not arrive before you leave.
The one thing that is genuinely hard to solve
Shoes with grip.
The village sells flip-flops and it sells plastic sandals. It does not sell anything you would want on a wet clay trail at a steep angle, and neither does Singaraja in most sizes.
This is the single item where bringing the right thing matters, because there is no local fix and the waterfall trail is the reason most people came.
Practicalities
Cash in small notes for village shops; cards are for Singaraja and above
Stock up on the drive north, not after arriving
Ask us first — the lending list above covers most panics
Laundry is same-day, which means you can pack for a week regardless of how long you stay
Nothing gets delivered here quickly. Treat online ordering as unavailable
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy a jacket if I forgot mine?
Something warm, yes, at village-shop quality. Something you would wear again at home, no.
Is there a pharmacy in the village?
A small shop with basics. The real one is in Singaraja. Bring anything you take regularly.
What about specific baby or dietary items?
Bring them. The village will not have them and Singaraja may not either.
Can I get cash out here?
Assume no. Draw what you need before you come up, or plan a Singaraja trip around it.
The short version
You can fix a forgotten toothbrush from here. You cannot fix forgotten shoes, forgotten medication, or a forgotten charger.
Pack for those three and the rest sorts itself out.
