Banyumala vs Sekumpul: Which North Bali Waterfall to Pick?

3 min read

Banyumala Twin Waterfalls and Sekumpul Waterfall are the two most photographed cascades in northern Bali.

Both sit within Buleleng regency, but they lie in completely different valleys, require different physical effort, and offer contrasting experiences.

Banyumala lies in the crater basin of Wanagiri, twenty-five minutes east of Munduk. Sekumpul sits in the steep eastern gorges of Lemukih, about ninety minutes away.

If you are planning your itinerary from Desa Eko or southern Bali, here is an honest comparison of the trail difficulty, water conditions, costs, and crowd realities.

The physical trail and stairs

The effort required to reach each waterfall decides whether it fits your day:

1. Banyumala Twin Waterfalls

  • The walk: A fifteen- to twenty-minute descent down a forested volcanic dirt trail reinforced with timber steps and bamboo handrails.

  • The exertion: Moderate. The path descends roughly one hundred vertical metres through shade. The return climb takes twenty to twenty-five minutes and raises your heart rate, but it is manageable for anyone with basic fitness.

  • Accessibility: Accessible without mandatory local guides. You buy a standard entrance ticket at the car park kiosk and walk down.

2. Sekumpul Waterfall

  • The walk: A demanding forty-five-minute descent into a deep canyon, involving over three hundred steep, uneven concrete stairs followed by a riverbed crossing.

  • The exertion: Strenuous. The return ascent climbs nearly three hundred vertical metres. In humid afternoon conditions, the climb back up taxes knees and cardiovascular endurance.

  • Guide requirement: Local village associations enforce mandatory guided packages for visitors hiking down into the gorge.

The water and swimming

Banyumala: The calm natural pool

Banyumala drops in twin curtains of water over a moss-covered rock face into a broad, oval plunge pool. The water depth is chest-high in the centre with a smooth gravel floor, and the waterfall spray is gentle. It is one of the best freshwater swimming spots in Bali. The water is cool—around 20 °C—and shaded by surrounding jungle canopy.

Sekumpul: Sheer vertical force

Sekumpul is an eighty-metre cascade plunging straight out of primary rainforest into a narrow gorge. The kinetic force creates a permanent cloud of heavy spray that drenches you fifty metres before you reach the pool. Swimming directly beneath the main cascade is dangerous due to falling water velocity and submerged boulders. You visit Sekumpul for the scale and raw acoustics, not for relaxed floating.

Road access and logistics

  • From Munduk (Desa Eko): Banyumala is a direct drive along the scenic caldera rim road above Lake Buyan. You can visit in the morning and return to the ridge for lunch at The Botanist in under three hours total. Sekumpul requires a winding three-hour round-trip drive along the eastern mountain roads.

  • Weather timing: In both locations, mornings between 07:30 and 11:00 offer the clearest skies and calmest river currents. Afternoon rains frequently roll in by 14:00.

How to choose between them

  • Choose Banyumala if: You want a refreshing swim in calm freshwater; you are travelling with children; you want an easy morning half-day trip; or your knees dislike climbing hundreds of steep steps.

  • Choose Sekumpul if: You want Bali’s tallest and most dramatic natural spectacle; you enjoy strenuous physical hiking; and you do not mind mandatory guide fees and steep canyon climbs.

Exploring Munduk’s own cascades

If you prefer to skip driving entirely, Munduk possesses its own network of cascades. A footpath descends from our forest boundary into our secluded canyon stream in ten minutes, continuing to Red Coral and Melanting without tour crowds.

Desa Eko accommodates sixteen guests across eight dwellings, including canvas tents on wooden decks, timber Deluxe Tents, and a 150 m² bamboo Studio.

Frequently asked questions

Can you visit both Banyumala and Sekumpul on the same day?

It is geographically possible, but we do not recommend it. Doing both involves over six hundred steps of steep climbing and four hours of driving, resulting in road fatigue. Pick one, and spend the other half of your day unhurried on the mountain ridge.

What footwear is needed for these waterfalls?

Wear trail runners or hiking sandals with aggressive rubber grip. Wet volcanic stone and algae near both river crossings are slick; flip-flops and smooth street sneakers cause slipping.

Are there lockers or changing facilities?

Banyumala has simple wooden changing stalls near the pool. Sekumpul has warung rest stops along the ridge before the canyon stairs descend.

Fresh highland breakfast, mountain coffee, and waterfall route guidance are provided with every room. Calendar availability and seasonal dates are published directly on our website.

Two nights, eight rooms, sixteen guests max. Breakfast and waterfall trails included.
