Coming to Munduk Alone: An Honest Guide for Solo Travellers
Updated: 11 hours ago
A solo traveller in Canggu has a plan by lunchtime. A solo traveller in Munduk has a valley.
Whether that is the holiday or the mistake depends on something you should work out before booking rather than after arriving. This is our attempt to help you work it out.
Who this suits
People who came to be alone on purpose. Writers, walkers, anyone between two things, anyone who has spent a year being available to everybody and would like three days of not being.
The village is small, the middle of the day has nothing in it, and there is no scene. If that reads as an offer rather than a warning, you will be fine here.
Who it does not suit
Anyone hoping to meet people and go out. Munduk closes early and there is no bar scene to fall into. If you are travelling alone specifically because you want company, Ubud or Canggu will give you that in an evening and we would rather say so.
The other honest case: if this is your first solo trip anywhere and you are nervous, somewhere busier is a gentler start.
The long table
Here is the thing that surprises solo guests. Dinner at The Botanist happens at one hardwood table seating about twenty-four, and everyone eats at it.
Arriving alone at a communal table sounds like an ordeal and is the opposite. You are not the person eating alone in a room of couples, because there is no room of couples. By the second night people know your name.
And if you do not want that, say so and we will seat you at the far end, which is genuinely private. Nobody will take it personally.
Safety
Munduk is a farming village where people know each other. It is quiet, and it is safe in the way small places generally are.
The real risks here are ordinary ones: a wet trail in the wrong shoes, and a scooter on switchbacks after dark. Both are avoidable.
Women travelling alone report Munduk as comfortable. The usual sensible practices apply, as they do anywhere.
What to do by yourself
The waterfall trail from the property. Ten minutes down, a steeper ten back, no guide needed
Dawn on the ridge with a coffee. Free, and about forty minutes of birdsong
The guided waterfall walk if you want company for a few hours, since guides are good conversation
The permaculture morning in the gardens, which is hands-in-the-soil rather than a tour
A massage, arranged with a day's notice
Nothing at all. The middle of the day is empty by design and the reflection platform by the river exists for exactly this
The cost question
Rooms are priced per room, not per person, which is the standard problem for solo travellers everywhere. There is no way around that arithmetic and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
What softens it: no single supplement games, breakfast included, and nothing else on the property costs anything unless you ask for it. There is no bar tab here because there is no bar to run one up in.
Practicalities
Minimum stay: two nights, and three is better alone
Getting here: about three hours from the airport; share a car if you meet someone on the same flight
Connectivity: wifi works, and there is signal. You can work from here for a week
Laundry: available, so pack lighter than you think
Frequently asked questions
Will I be the only solo traveller?
Sometimes. With eight rooms it varies week to week, and there is no way to promise otherwise.
Is it awkward eating alone?
Less so here than anywhere, because of the table. This is the single most common piece of feedback from guests who arrived worried about it.
Can I work from here?
Yes. Good wifi, cool mornings, nothing to distract you. Several people have come for a week to finish something and finished it.
Three nights alone, is that too long?
Two is not really enough to stop moving. Three is the point at which most people report the sleep changing.
The honest summary
Munduk is not where you come to meet people. It is where you come to stop performing for them, and then, at about seven each evening, discover you quite like the ones at the table.
Two nights, eight rooms, a thousand metres up. Three is better if you are coming alone.
