Worth Stopping For: How to Break the Drive to Munduk
Updated: Sep 25
Most people treat the drive north as something to survive. Three hours, a winding last stretch, then arrival.
It can be that. It can also be the best day of the trip, because almost everything worth seeing between the airport and the ridge is within a few minutes of the road you are already on. The only cost is leaving early.
Jatiluwih
Adds about ninety minutes, including the walk.
A UNESCO-listed valley of rice terraces, still farmed by the subak system that has organised water here for a thousand years. It is not the terrace everybody photographs — that one is near Ubud, smaller, and full of people charging for the view.
Jatiluwih is enormous and mostly empty. There is a walking loop of about an hour, and a shorter one for anyone in the wrong shoes.
Go in the morning. By afternoon the cloud comes down and the whole valley disappears.
Ulun Danu Beratan
Adds about forty-five minutes.
The lake temple from the fifty-thousand rupiah note, sitting on the water with the mountains behind it. Photogenic enough to justify the stop, busy enough that you will wait your turn for the photograph. Arrive early or accept the queue.
It is directly on the route, so the only question is timing. Before nine it is mist and quiet. By eleven there are coaches.
The Handara Gate
Adds fifteen minutes, and this is the honest one.
A tall split gate framing the mountains, which you have seen on a hundred feeds. There is a fee to stand in it and there is usually a queue.
The photograph is exactly what you expect. The experience is standing in a car park waiting your turn. We mention it because people ask, not because we would stop.
The coffee stops on the climb
Ten minutes, and pick carefully.
The last stretch is lined with places advertising coffee and a view. Most are retail operations where the coffee is an excuse and the gift shop is the point, and several push caged civet coffee, which we would ask you to skip entirely.
Choose one with a view and no showroom. Order it black once, whatever they suggest — mountain coffee is worth tasting without the sugar.
Building the day
Two stops is the number. Three turns a scenic drive into a schedule, and you will arrive tired rather than decompressed.
The combination that works best: Jatiluwih in the morning while the air is clear, lunch on the road, Ulun Danu on the way past, then the climb. You reach the ridge in the late afternoon with the temperature falling, which is the right way to arrive.
Tell your driver before you set off, not during. The route and the timing change depending on what you want to see.
Practicalities
Leave early. Everything on this list is better before eleven and worse after two
Small cash for entrance fees and parking; cards are not much use
A layer in the car, because the last hour is ten degrees cooler than the first
Motion sickness catches people out on the switchbacks. Front seat, light breakfast
Tell us your plan and we will time your arrival around it
Frequently asked questions
Can I do all four?
You can. You will spend eleven hours on the road and remember none of them clearly.
Is Jatiluwih worth it if I have already seen rice terraces?
Yes, because the scale is different. Most terraces near Ubud are a single hillside. This is a whole valley still being farmed.
What if I land in the afternoon?
Then drive straight up and do the stops on the way back down instead. The road is the same in both directions and the light in the late afternoon is better anyway.
Is there anywhere decent to eat on the route?
Around Bedugul and the lakes, yes. Simple warungs, mountain vegetables, nothing elaborate. Eat before the climb rather than after.
The part people do not expect
The drive changes temperature in stages, and you feel each one. Coastal heat for the first hour, then the terraces, then the clove trees, then a window you have to close.
That gradient is the whole point of coming north, and it only happens if you are awake for it.
Two nights, eight rooms, a thousand metres up. Tell us what you want to stop for and we will build the drive around it.
