Yoga Above the Clouds: Practice at Altitude in Munduk

There is a moment in the 7 am class, usually around the third sun salutation, when the mist below the deck begins to lift. It moves up the valley in slow silver sheets, sometimes reaching the platform itself, so that for a few breaths you are folding forward into cloud. No studio in the world has installed anything like it.

This is yoga at Desa Eko: an open-air wooden deck at a thousand meters, facing east, with the Munduk valley as the fourth wall.
Why altitude changes the practice
Practitioners notice it within a day or two. The air at 1,000 meters is subtly thinner, enough to make breath awareness less an instruction than an inevitability. The temperature sits between eighteen and twenty-two degrees, which means you warm up by moving rather than by enduring; the sweaty struggle of sea-level Bali yoga simply is not part of the experience here. And sleep, every teacher who visits says it, deepens at altitude after the second night. Recovery is half of practice. The mountain does that half for you.
The deck
Twenty mats' capacity, solid timber, full props library of blocks, straps, and bolsters. Facing east for sunrise, sheltered against green-season drizzle, and open on three sides to the valley soundscape of birds, wind through clove trees, and the distant white noise of water that the whole region runs on. No playlist competes with it, so none is used.
The teachers
A rotation of local and visiting teachers, all certified at 200 hours or beyond, teaching in English and Bahasa. We choose them for the quality of their attention rather than their following, the kind of teacher who adjusts the person, not the pose.
For retreat leaders

The deck, and the property around it, hosts retreats for much of the year. Full-day programming, from sunrise pranayama through morning asana to sunset yin and sound baths at the fire circle, can be built around your teaching. If you lead retreats, the Host Your Retreat page covers capacity and rates, or write to us directly. Teachers who visit as guests have a way of returning with students.
Practicalities
Levels: all classes are open-level, with modifications offered as standard
Mats and props: provided; bring your own mat only if it is a personal ritual
What to wear: layers, since the 7 am air is fresh until the body warms
Altitude adjustments: hydrate more than you would at sea level; the first day's practice may feel subtly different, so let it
Frequently asked questions
I am a complete beginner. Truly welcome?
Truly. The Hatha class in particular assumes nothing and adjusts everything.
Can teenagers join?
Yin and restorative classes suit teens well. Ask about the morning classes.
Is there meditation instruction?
Guided breathwork and meditation elements are woven into classes, and private meditation sessions can be arranged.
What happens when it rains?
The deck's roof handles ordinary rain, which, with the mist and the sound of it on timber, often improves the class beyond argument.
The practice the place teaches
The honest secret is that the deck does most of the teaching. Cool air, long views, no schedule pressing at the door. Under those conditions, almost anyone's practice deepens. Our teachers simply try not to get in the way.
